I Think I Tore My ACL

Has it been a long while since you’ve played an active sport that required you to run, jump, pivot, and twist? Do you have any past injuries you should check in on? Performing a quick mental check-in can help you prevent certain injuries and old injuries from being aggravated again. Especially if you are starting a sport you haven’t played in years, you may want to work your way up into being active again.
Do you wonder why we are suggesting being so cautious? Because we understand that picking up sports again leads to an increase in ACL injuries. Unfortunately, tearing an ACL is a serious injury that can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Keep reading to learn about ACL tears and what recovery from an ACL tear is like.
The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament in your knee that helps to stabilize it. It connects your tibia to your femur, encouraging good balance and movement. As such, sports that require quick slowing down, changing direction, jumping, or pivoting with your foot planted can lead to a higher chance of an ACL tear.
If you do tear your ACL, there are two clear options: you can undergo surgery or let it heal on its own. Letting your ACL heal itself is a lengthy process, and mostly recommended for people who are not very active or should not undergo surgery for health or other reasons. Surgery is often recommended for individuals who are young and active, or those who play sports and want to be able perform as they used to.
Recovery from ACL surgery takes time, too, so don’t assume you’ll be back on the field immediately after your surgery. You will want to follow your doctor’s recommendations to the letter to ensure the best recovery. After your surgery, resting and icing your knee is important. Follow the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation to prevent swelling. You will also want to start physical therapy when your physician says it is time. Physical therapy will support your ability to move and perform as you used to.
