What to Expect in Recovery Following Full Knee Replacement Surgery
- Posted on: Nov 30 2019
At Summit Healthcare Orthopedic Center, patients in the area of Show Low, AZ who are considering full knee replacement surgery may be unsure as to whether or not they should move forward. Many patients are worried about what the recovery from knee replacement surgery entails. The doctors at Summit Healthcare Orthopedic Center encourage patients who are considering knee replacement to speak to them during a consultation and initial evaluation to determine if this treatment is right for them. This is also a great time for doctors to put patients at ease regarding the recovery from surgery.
Will I be able to walk right away?
In most situations, patients are encouraged to begin walking the same day s their surgical procedure. This may be done with a walker or other orthopedic device. Movement of the knee can help strengthen the area and keep the area from becoming stiff.
How long will I be in the hospital?
Most patients will be in the hospital for a day or two following their surgical procedure. However, some patients can go home the same day if the medical team feels it is safe to do so. Patients who do not have home supports to assist them during the recovery period may be transferred to a rehabilitation center where they can be monitored and assisted throughout the healing process.
What will need to be done to regain range of motion and walk again without assistance?
After patients are discharged from the hospital, they are given referral instructions for outpatient physical therapy. Physical therapy is best after discharge as it can help in strengthening the knee, increase range of motion, reduce scar tissue, and educate patients on how they can properly use assistive walking devices such as canes and walkers. Over time, by building strength and overall flexibility, patients can walk unaided near the end of their recovery period.
